Foods to Eat If You Have Gum Disease

November 30, 2021 2:46 am

Gum disease is a progressive ailment that weakens gum tissue and makes your teeth vulnerable to decay and loss. To combat gum disease, we recommend brushing and flossing every day, regularly visiting Lynn Lane Family Dentistry, and consuming a healthy diet.

In this blog post, we highlight some foods you should eat more to help prevent gum disease or to improve your gum health if you currently have gum disease.

  1. Nuts & Seeds
  2. Nuts and seeds, like pistachios and sesame seeds, are rich with omega-3 fatty acids that are anti-inflammatory in nature and can help reduce gum swelling.

  3. Fermented Foods
  4. Yogurt, kimchi, and sauerkraut all contain probiotics, which curb the effects of bad bacteria growth under the gumline. Studies have shown that consuming more probiotics can mitigate the impact of gum disease.

  5. Green Tea
  6. Soda, coffee, and black tea all contain acids and sugars that can make gum disease worse. Green tea, however, is full of catechins, nutrients that can combat gum disease.

  7. Cacao
  8. If you have a sweet tooth, it can be hard to avoid sugary chocolate if you’re trying to maintain a healthy smile. But cacao is healthy for your teeth and can curb tooth decay. Choose chocolate that is at least 70% cacao and is low in sugar for a tooth-friendly treat.

  9. Raw Fruits & Vegetables
  10. Crunchy apples, carrots, and crisp lettuces are full of minerals and vitamins that support strong, healthy teeth and can calm inflamed gums. Bell peppers are particularly great for gum disease because of their high vitamin C levels.
