What Does Dental Sedation Feel Like?

May 25, 2023 1:23 am

If you struggle with dental anxiety and feel nervous about an upcoming dental treatment, you would likely benefit from dental sedation! Dental sedation is special medication to help you feel less anxious and more comfortable during dental treatments. It is appropriate for a wide variety of patients, procedures, and levels of anxiety.

Depending on the method Dr. Holleman recommends based on your treatment and overall health, how dental sedation feels may differ. However, sedation typically helps inhibit discomfort and will make you feel calm, drowsy, and relaxed. Patients typically do not remember much of what happens during their procedure.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is inhaled through a small mask that fits over the nose. When inhaled, a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide helps you feel warmly relaxed, calm, and slightly heavy. The effects of this mild sedation wear off soon after you start breathing normal air.

Oral Conscious Sedation

With oral conscious sedation, medication in either liquid form or pills will be prescribed before your appointment to aid relaxation before and during your procedure. Though you won’t be asleep, oral conscious sedation will make you feel incredibly drowsy. You will need a trusted friend or family member drive you to and from your appointment for your safety.

Benefits of dental sedation

Dental sedation allows patients to:

  • Feel less anxious and more comfortable at the dentist
  • Experience less pain during their dental procedures
  • Have dental visits that are less stressful
  • Not be negatively affected by a sensitive gag reflex
  • Receive multiple treatments during one visit
